Grade 12 Mathematics is one of the most feared and most rewarding subjects in the South African curriculum. The difference between students who struggle and students who pass well almost always comes down to how they study, not how smart they are.
The Grade 12 Maths Exam Structure
Calculus + Trigonometry + Analytical Geometry account for roughly 60% of your total maths mark. Master these three and you are already passing.
The 4-Step Study Method
Learn the theory (20% of your time)
Read your textbook. Understand why formulas work. Write each formula on a flashcard.
Work through examples (30%)
Do worked examples. Cover the solution, try it yourself, then check.
Practice exercises (30%)
Start easy, progress harder. Mark your work immediately.
Past paper drills (20%)
Do past paper questions by topic. Time yourself: 1 minute per mark.
Topic Tips
Calculus (35% of Paper 1)
- First principles – the limit definition of a derivative
- Differentiation rules – power rule, chain rule
- Cubic graphs – sketching, turning points, inflection
- Optimisation – maximising/minimising real scenarios
Examiners love optimisation questions at the end of calculus (8-10 marks). Most students skip them. Learn to set up the equation from a word problem.
Trigonometry (33% of Paper 2)
- Compound and double angles
- Trig identities and proofs
- General solutions
- Sine and cosine rules for 2D/3D
Common Mistakes
- Reading notes instead of doing problems – if your pen is not moving, you are not studying maths
- Skipping steps – show every step for method marks
- Not checking answers – substitute back into the original equation
